Where do we meet?
We meet on the first Wednesday of every month for a lunch at the West Surrey Golf Club. We usually have a speaker but we also enjoy exchanging news, ideas and enjoying each other’s company.
In August we have an informal lunch in a member’s garden, and on Inner Wheel Day (10thJanuary), we have an informal charity fundraising ‘Bring and Buy’ lunch at a member’s home.
We hold ‘Quiz Nights’ in March, as a major fundraising event, at the local Masonic Hall – who’d have known that the Masonic Hall sells alcohol at such very, very reasonable prices? The drinks flow, the Quizzers nibble snacks, and the members lay on a Ploughman’s supper and we hold a charity fund-raising raffle.
We hold monthly coffee mornings at a local pub/restaurant or the local Garden Centre’s café. We organise outings, for example we’ve visited: Woolbeding National Trust Gardens near Midhurst, theatre visits, and the Silent Pool Gin Distillery at Albury (where gin samples were given) with dinner afterwards at the nearby Drummond Arms. Other special events organised include a Concert featuring Slindon Concert Band and Signature A Capella Singers, in aid of Riding for the Disabled and other Inner Wheel charities, and a memorable Burns Night Supper in a school hall on a steep hill: not only did we have Scottish dancers, a Piper, and haggis on the menu, we also had falling, lying snow which made negotiating the steep hill to drive home extremely perilous, at least one member sustained damage to her car! In previous years we’ve also had Afternoon Tea on a boat trip on the local Wey and Arun Canal, and are organising another one for summer 2023 – so come and join us – you won’t regret it!
Club President
Our president for 2023 – 2024 is Susan Knowles. Her chosen charity for this year is The Royal Surrey County Hospitals Cancer and Surgical Innovation Campaign: Please click on this link for more information. Royal Surrey Hospitals Campaign
The Cancer and Surgical Innovation Campaign is an ambitious and game-changing development, which will see Royal Surrey build upon its world class services in traditional and robotic surgery, enhance its theatre capacity and improve patient experiences and outcomes throughout Surrey and the South East.
Across the NHS, meeting the demand for surgical treatment whilst introducing the latest research and clinical advances is a challenge, more so in the wake of the Covid pandemic. Together with developments in earlier cancer diagnosis and the UK’s growing ageing population investing in surgical services is a key priority for regional NHS bodies.
We are pleased to say that the Royal Surrey has responded to this need and we have already secured, with support from Jeremy Hunt MP, the approval from NHS England to spend £25m to build a new surgical centre. This will be built at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford and operate alongside the existing St Luke’s Cancer Centre.
