About District 1
Our District covers a vast geographical area in the Northeast of Scotland. Our current clubs stretch from Inverness, the capital of the highlands, in the north, along the spectacular Moray coast to Nairn and Banff then south as far as Stirling and Dunfermline on the Firth of Forth. We have 14 clubs with over 400 members – more than 20 of those new this year. All clubs have a formal meeting each month except for July and August – with social events, coffee mornings, walks and fund- raising activities spread throughout the year.
The area is rich in culture and history with spectacular scenery – the high mountains of the Cairngorms with rivers and glens leading down to the gentler lowlands below; nature reserves where otters, ospreys, deer and red squirrels abound; and gigantic sea cliffs with colonies of migratory sea birds. The district is home to hundreds of castles and places of interest to visit. Here you can visit cities like Aberdeen – the oil capital if the UK; Dundee – now a UNESCO city of culture with the V & A museum; or the newly created city of Dunfermline. Opportunities abound to participate in hillwalking, fishing, playing golf or even curling. Another activity would be to visit one of the whisky distilleries along Speyside or go monster spotting on Loch Ness – the choice is endless!
District Chairman

District Chairman Nanette Thomson
Welcome
Dear Friends,
I am absolutely delighted to be “recycled” after 22 years to again be your District Chairman. I am very aware of the honour and privilege that it is to be Chairman of District 1. The most prestigious District in the World and I thank my own Club, Stirling, for their support in doing this and to you all for the warm wishes and encouragement.
Next year I will have been a member of Inner Wheel for 40 years (did they let schoolgirls in then?). Throughout these years l have made so many friends through our great organisation and l do hope to make a few more as l travel around our District visiting our Clubs – the best bit about being District Chairman.
Our Association President Pat Russell has chosen Papyrus as her charity which helps with the prevention of suicide in young people.
In April 2027 the Association Conference will be in Cheltenham. Please join me there if you can, there will be lots of fun and fellowship.
District 1 Rally will be on May 28th 2027 in Inglewood House, Alloa.
Our IIW President’s theme this year is Grow and Flourish. I hope, here in District 1 we will grow, I will certainly try my best to make sure we all “flourish”.
Looking forward to my travels around our District and meeting you all.
With very best wishes.

Who we support

My charity for my year as District Chairman is It’s good 2 give. Founded in 2010, this charity is committed to supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of young cancer patients (aged 0-18) and their families in Scotland.
It offers a wide range of support to both patients and hospitals. That includes practical and mental health support, as well as providing short breaks at their purpose-built retreat. They work closely with hospitals and organisations to identify and deliver projects in line with our aims.
It funds four psychologist posts on the children’s oncology wards; two in Edinburgh and two in Glasgow, to support a young cancer patients mental health from diagnosis.
They are also proud to host young cancer patients and their families at the Ripple Retreat — a purpose-built, restful place on the shores of Loch Venachar, Callander, here in District 1. It provides a peaceful escape and opportunity to relax and focus on mental wellness, offering families time away from doctors, procedures, and hospitals, in a safe and calming environment.
