Inner Wheel District 5

Inner Wheel District 5

About District 5

Inner Wheel District 5 is made up of 14 clubs that are situated in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. We currently have around 250 members. We are very proud to have within our district the Founder Club of Manchester, where the Inner Wheel story began 100 years ago.

All of our clubs hold monthly meetings, some in the evening, some at lunchtime and some a mixture of the two! A wide range of fundraising activities take place in our clubs during each Inner Wheel year. More information can be found on the individual club pages. All of our clubs warmly welcome women who are interested in joining our wonderful organisation.

District Chairman Sheila Salden

Welcome

Welcome to the 101st year of Inner Wheel – the world has changed Immeasurably since 1924 when our movement was founded by Margarette Golding at the Turkish Baths in Manchester. Many clubs followed her Innovative idea of starting what has become the largest women’s organisation in the World.

We in District 5 are all cogs in the wheel – in engineering terms the cog is the centre of the wheel from which we radiate our objectives of Friendship, Service and International understanding. As a by product of these aims we feel we are at the heart of humanity in helping to also raise funds to care for others through lots of different ways and having fun doing it!

The fun I am still having began in 1990 when I joined Hazel Grove. A letter came from a very gracious lady, Ethel Bromley. whom I knew, as she supported her husband in his local butcher’s shop which I frequented. My late husband  was a Rotarian, so I found we could enjoy events together as our 3 children were growing up. I then gave time to being Overseas Service officer, Club Correspondent, District Editor, twice President and most recently Secretary, all of which I have enjoyed.

If you are interested in the ideals of service in your local community, please make contact with one of our District 5 clubs and take it from there.
I promise – you won’t regret it!

Who we support

My chosen charity this year is St. Ann’s Hospice, Heald Green. Cheadle, SK8 3SZ
They are at present digging foundations for a new hospice adjoining the present one and I am especially interested in this as it is a wonderful place and I sing in the Hospice Festival Choir.

“St Ann’s want to build a complete care facility in Greater Manchester that local people can access – from the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness through to treatment, and beyond. Our holistic approach to care will meet the complete and complex medical, physical and spiritual needs of our patients and their families, in a world-class environment that is welcoming, caring and fully equipped with modern facilities. Over fifty years ago, the Manchester community took St Ann’s to their hearts and helped us build this hospice. Today, we’re asking you to help us build a new St Ann’s that’s fit for purpose and fit to care for your family, friends and neighbours in the years ahead”.
