D8 The Mayor visits Ely Inner Wheel

At our October meeting Ely Inner Wheel welcomed the mayor of Ely the Reverend Mike Banyard.    Mike gave a humorous description of his life which has included a teaching career that started in Ely then extended to Cyprus, Hong Kong and Germany.  On returning to Ely he retired from teaching in his late 50’s and trained for the ministry. He served as Rector at Fordham and only recently gave up his role as priest vicar at the Cathedral. He brought along a collection of items from his life abroad including a Chinese outfit belonging to his wife and a beautiful sculpture of a dragon. This months bring and buy stall had the theme of Orange to mark the involvement of Inner Wheel with the United Nations initiative  “ Orange the World” which is a campaign to end violence to women and girls. Some of our members also wore orange to the meeting.    President Julia Smith thanked Mike for his talk and presented him with a cheque for his charities, Ely Food Bank and Ely Volunteer Bureau.
