Ely Innerwheel hears about the Ely Cemetery

Ely Innerwheel hears about the Ely Cemetery

At the Oct. meeting of the Ely Innerwheel, deputy Mayor Chris Phillips gave a fascinating talk on Ely Cemetery “ Stories behind the Stones”. The Ely Cemetery was created as the population of Ely outgrew the original burial grounds of the Cathedral. Chris described the different fashions of gravestones, the huge variety of people buried there from local dignitaries to a murderer and victim buried side by side. More recently a sensory garden was created in memory of the many children buried in unmarked graves. President Mary Rone thanked Chris for his talk and left many members expressing a desire to visit the cemetery and take a look for themselves.
