About District 8

DISTRICT 8 CHAIRMAN 2023-24 Deirdre Rothwell
I feel very privileged to be your District Chairman in a year when Inner Wheel celebrates its 100th year. There will be a Convention in Manchester in May and a lunch in London in April to celebrate this special year. Both will give us the opportunity to meet members from all over the world. Much has happened since Margarette Golding had the vision to start Inner Wheel in 1924. It is now an international organisation. The computer age has made a vast difference to our world. Women also have a much bigger input into the world of work. What does remain the same in this changing world however is the Objects of Inner Wheel:
To promote friendship. Encourage the ideals of personal service. to foster international understanding.
I have been a member for 14 years, six of which have been on the District Executive Committee. I belong to a very lively club in Woodbridge and have been their President and their treasurer. Being active within the District has certainly broadened my horizons. I have enjoyed meeting many more members outside my own club. I am now looking forward to visiting all the clubs during my year. If you have never attended a District meeting before, can I suggest that attending the Rally will be a good place to start! Hopefully you will enjoy a delicious lunch in the beautiful surroundings of Woodhall Manor, and best of all, meeting friendly faces from all over District 8. Please put Tuesday 10th October into your diary.
Please remember the theme for this year – 100 for 100. Hopefully you can think of some great ideas for this theme, promoting Inner Wheel within our communities. Let’s make our 100th Year a year to remember and let’s have fun!

Who we support
This year our District Chairman’s Charity is The Longford Trust and the Association President’s Charity is Beat Eating Disorders.

BEAT is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Founded in 1989 as the Eating Disorders Association, our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders.

The Longford Trust is about second chances for people who have been in prison. The Longford Scholarship programme has, over the past 17 years, supported almost 500 young people, most of them in the 20s, to rebuild their lives through education after serving a prison sentence. 85% go to university, graduate and move forward thanks to the Employability project to have careers, to settle down, and to start families. In short, they do all the “normal” things that most take for granted. The Longford Trust works with them to make that happen.
