About District 8

DISTRICT 8 CHAIRMAN 2023 -24 Deirdre Rothwell

News from District Chairman

On Wednesday March 23rd, we had our District Committee meeting in Honnington and Sapiston Village Hall.  Over 50 members enjoyed a delicious lunch, followed by the meeting. Several items were discussed, including the vacancies on the executive committee. Liz Thomas kindly offered to be the Treasurer for 2024 – 25. We are still in need of a Member of Council and a vice District Chairman. It is very enjoyable being on the committee and certainly widens the experience of Inner Wheel, so it is hoped that some members will step forward before the AGM in June.

Prior to the meeting we had a presentation for the District Chairman’s charity, The Longford Trust. The Director, Peter Stanfield gave an interesting and amusing talk explaining the work that the Trust does to help ex-prisoners receive a university education. This was followed up with a talk from Steve Gallant, himself an ex-prisoner, who was able to explain how thanks to the Trust, he turned his life around and is now a successful businessman. Steve was very modest about his achievements, but Peter was able to point out that he had received the Queen’s Gallantry Award for his bravery in stopping the terrorist at Fishmongers Hall in 2019.  He has also written a biography of his life, called “The Road to London Bridge”. Judging by the questions asked after the presentation, the members appreciated all that they had heard.

Who we support

This year our District Chairman’s Charity is The Longford Trust and the Association President’s Charity is Beat Eating Disorders.

BEAT is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Founded in 1989 as the Eating Disorders Association, our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders.

The Longford Trust is about second chances for people who have been in prison. The Longford Scholarship programme has, over the past 17 years, supported almost 500 young people, most of them in the 20s, to rebuild their lives through education after serving a prison sentence. 85% go to university, graduate and move forward thanks to the Employability project to have careers, to settle down, and to start families. In short, they do all the “normal” things that most take for granted. The Longford Trust works with them to make that happen.

Who we are

District 8 is located in  the Eastern “bulge” of England i.e East Anglia within the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. This is a large geographical area over which our 12 clubs are scattered, some on the coast and some inland on the fens.  District meetings are held where possible in a fairly central location but this of course still entails long mileages for attendees. However we continue to be a lively District with successful clubs.
