D129 GARDEN VISIT

WEDNESDAY 15 MAY 2024
INNER WHEEL CENTENARY CELEBRATION

This, our Centenary year, the Team at District 129 are planning to celebrate this milestone in a very special way. On Wednesday May 15th, 2024, all D 129 Inner Wheel Club Members are invited to Pencarrow House and Garden on the outskirts of Bodmin for a day of celebration – PL30 3AG.

The car park for Pencarrow opens at 10.00 am. There will be Guided tours in groups of about 15 to see the House from 10 30 am onwards based on a first come first served basis. Members are free to wander around the gardens where many of the rhododendrons will be in full bloom, bluebells will be in abundance as well as a range of other plants for us to admire and do not forget the peacocks.

Please bring a picnic with you (either on an individual basis or perhaps as a Club?)
We have the picnic area with tables for our sole use, car parking is nearby so you may be more comfortable with your own seating. The Peacock Cafe will be open for us to use alongside the public.

14.00 Photograph opportunity in front of the House -can we have 100 members
taking part?

14.30 Picnic Area cutting of the centenary cake with a glass of Prosecco.
In Plan A we are hoping for a lovely sunny dry day!! But please do wear sensible footwear to walk in the gardens. Plan B wear wellies and bring an umbrella! The
dress code depends on the weather.

The cost of the outing will be £15 per member (to include a guided tour of the
house) and needs to be booked through your Club secretary  by Friday 3rd May please. Your Club Secretary will have your forms.
Let us all have a wonderful outing together full of friendship, fun and laughter.
Yours in friendship,
Beatrice Dyer Angie Tamblyn

District Chairman Bea suggested that our Spring District meeting should be held on International Women’s Day in celebration of women everywhere and all that we accomplish.

73 ladies gathered at Trethorne, near Launceston , from all corners of Cornwall, Plymouth and Tavistock  to hear our guest speaker Dr Mairi McLean who gave us an entertaining but thought provoking insight into her life and career starting out as a trainee social worker and coming, by quite an indirect but always challenging route, to her current role as Chairman of the Board of The Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust.

Mairi detailed some of the many obstacles put in her way, and the way of many women in the workplace, and the importance of a ‘good listening to’ rather than a ‘good talking to’ when issues arose in the workplace, and to be aware not only how you spoke but how you sounded to others, particularly to junior colleagues, a smile was a good start.

After a few minutes for questions and discussion we all adjourned to the dining room for an excellent lunch.

The business meeting was held at 2pm and thanks to Bea’s leadership it was all done and dusted by 3.05pm.

Afternoon tea was then served, followed by an inter-club bowling tournament.

The next District gathering will be a day at Pencarrow house near Bodmin on Wednesday May 15th, where they are looking forward to welcoming us to celebrate 100 years of Inner Wheel, with a tour of the house and a private garden area for a celebration picnic to be followed by birthday cake and prosecco, Sunshine has been requested.

District Editor – Liz Williams

Thank you to the Club Correspondents and others who have sent in their Home Service reports again this year, I know it is a challenge to get them done, especially in December.

In the year January to December 2023, as a District we have supported 10 national charities, and locally we have supported 2 for the elderly, 11 for the young, 2 Hospices, 3 disabled, 7 medical and 17 community charities to the sum of £20,610 on top of the monies sent to the Air Ambulance for the National President’s Charity and to Penhaligon’s Friends for the District charity for 2022 /23

This is, of course, only part of our story when you take into account the knitting, the gardening, the visiting, the serving, the litter picking, the gifts to food banks, the collecting of so much ‘stuff’, not to mention all the monies and goods raised for International charities, so very well done ladies.
