About District 12
Inner Wheel District 12 covers all of Kent, part of East Sussex and some London Boroughs.
We have 17 clubs in the District with roughly 800 members.
Aylesford Bridge (pictured) was built in the 14th century to cross the Medway at Aylesford. The bridge is constructed from Kentish ragstone and formerly had eight pointed arches without ribs. However, in 1824 the two centre arches were replaced by a single arch of 60 feet span. The outer 6 arches are pointed and double-chamfered with stone dressings. Sloping buttresses to piers with cut-waters below on rebuilt concrete foundations, revealed only at low tide. The bridge is Scheduled and Listed Grade I.
District Chairman

District Chairman Pat Wakeham
Welcome
I am delighted and proud to be your D.12 Chairman this year. Compared with many in the District, I have not been a member of Inner Wheel for all that long, joining in 2012 when I retired from my job as a teacher. I joined the Canterbury club and soon found myself volunteering to take office as club Treasurer, Secretary and President at various times. I soon came to realise what a wonderful organization Inner Wheel is, offering service to the local community, raising funds for good causes and giving members the opportunity to make new friends. I feel that friendship is probably the most important element of Inner Wheel.
It has been a real pleasure being a member of the Canterbury Club in 2025 as we celebrated our centenary year. Knowing that we are the second oldest Inner Wheel club in the world made all the hard work we put into our celebrations worthwhile. Our centenary lunch, our celebratory church service and a concert given by a male voice choir were enjoyed by members across the District and beyond.
I have been District Treasurer for the last five years and have greatly enjoyed the new friends I have made in this role. I am a firm believer in the fact that the more you put into something, the more you get out of it and it was this that encouraged me to stand as District Chairman this year. I encourage all members to make the most of their membership by attending District Meetings and Interclub events, where they will make lots of new friends. I shall strive to add an element of fun to the business of these meetings and am always open to suggestions from members as to how we might do this.
I look forward to visiting the 17 clubs remaining in the District and hopefully, together, we can continue to fulfil the objects of Inner Wheel and encourage more ladies to join us in doing so.

Who we support

I have chosen the Pilgrims Hospices for my charity this year, as I am sure everyone is aware of the amazing work done by hospices across the country. Pilgrims was the vision of a village nurse called Ann Robertson, who wanted to make a difference for the people in her community. Today there are three Pilgrims Hospices, in Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet, and together they support more than 2,400 people across East Kent each year. Whilst Pilgrims is my specific charity, I am very happy for the clubs in the district to support the hospice in their area.
It costs in excess of £17 million to run the Pilgrims Hospices each year and less than a quarter of this is funded by the NHS. Pilgrims has to raise £15 million each year to cover a wide range of services within the 3 hospices but also to care for people in their own homes. I am sure that many members across D12 will know someone who is grateful for the care offered by their local hospice.
I hope that members across the District will be happy to support my charity this year as I know that they, like Ann Robertson, want to make a difference in their community.
