About District 1

Inner Wheel District 1 is the most northern of the 29 Districts that make up the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in GB&I.  It covers most of the north and east of Scotland.  There are 19 clubs in the District with around 550 members. All clubs have a formal meeting each month with social and fund raising activities during the month. None of the clubs meet formally in July and August, however social events, fund raising, coffee mornings and walks continue over the summer months.

Message from District Chairman  : Doris Campbell

Thank you for visiting our District 1 website. You will find as much information as possible about our District including the District Team, our diary and club information. Have a look at all our magazines  produced by Editor, Jean who also updates our website and Facebook. Remember you, too can post of Facebook. I look after Instagram for our District. The News from our District highlights some of the many activities and community service that members do. I am sure you will agree that we enjoy much friendship over a coffee and cake.

This year I am District Chairman and will try my very best to chair meetings and get to know members when I visit each club from September to November. I have some special dates in my diary such as the 75th Charter for the Dundee Club and 80th Charter for the Aberdeen Club. I shall also be inducting some new members when I visit Clubs.  I am so looking forward to my Club visits and travelling around the District. I have some offers of company from Aberdeen Club members so I shall more than likely ‘bring a friend’.

The District Charity this year is Scottish Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) and is crucial to saving lives in Scotland and in our most remote areas. SCAA does not receive government funding and operates 365 days a year. It is also part of the 21 local air ambulances that make up Air Ambulance UK, our Association President’s Charity. Visit SCAA’s website or come and hear our speaker in the morning of our District Assembly on 24th August.

I have to mention that my family from Melbourne is home for the summer. This is the first time I have seen my Grandson, Magnus who is 16 months old.  Magnus is Colin and I’s first grandchild. I thought I would call myself Granny – Magnus has chosen ‘Gaga’ and I don’t mind as Lady Gaga is a favourite artist of mine! My portrait was taken by daughter Jenny who is a professional photographer in Melbourne and I asked for any touch up necessary to remove the tiredness and puffiness with the hot weather. Tricks of the trade.

With my best wishes

Doris x

Our chosen charities

Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) operates two helicopters, which both have an operational area of around 30,000 square miles, serving a population of over 5 million.  One is based at Perth Airport and Aberdeen Airport. From these bases, our crew can reach patients across the country before rapidly transporting them to the most appropriate hospital, even if it isn’t the closest option

Our experienced pilots are granted the right, by the Civil Aviation Authority, to land anywhere they deem safe whilst on a HEMS call. A safe landing requires a clear space of around 25m in daylight, which is roughly equivalent to a tennis court.

Our helicopters carry all the equipment you would find in a land ambulance plus some of the more advanced equipment you’d expect to find in a hospitalon average SCAA responds to 2 time critical call outs every day

  • it is a national charity but receives no statutory government funding
  • relies 100% on donations from the public
  • since launching in 2013 it has responded  to 4043 calls
  • it takes 25 mins to reach 90% of Scotland’s population
  • it operates 365 days of the year
  • £2500 is cost of average life saving mission

70th District Rally

Our District Rally was held on Friday 27th May at the Banff Springs Hotel.  The noise level was high as 67 guests and members greeted old friends and of course met new ones.  This is the first Rally for 3 years and members were delighted to be back together again to celebrate District Chairman Mary Berstan’s year of office.  Banff Inner Wheel had organised an excellent event and the hotel served a delicious meal.  Pre-lunch drinks were served and the guests were entertained by a musical programme provided by pupils from Banff Academy.

The following carousel of photos should give you a flavour of the day.
