Inner Wheel District 1

About District 1

Inner Wheel District 1 is the most northern of the 29 Districts that make up the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in GB&I.  It covers most of the north and east of Scotland.  There are 17 clubs in the District with 496 members. All clubs have a formal meeting each month with social and fund raising activities during the year. None of the clubs meet formally in July and August, however social events, fund raising, coffee mornings and walks continue over the summer months.

From our District Chairman, Annetta

I am Pitlochry born and bred and met my husband Stuart whilst he was working there. We were married in 1972 and not long after, moved to Carnoustie to join his family electrical business. We have 3 children, 2 girls and a boy, 4 grandsons and 1 grand-daughter.  Whilst in Carnoustie, Stuart was invited to become a member of the Rotary Club of Carnoustie and subsequently I was asked to help establish a new Inner Wheel Club in the town in 1978. Little did I think then that I would become Chairman of District1, in fact at that time I had little or no idea about the function of the District Executive and its resposibilities.  Unfortunately the Carnoustie Club dissolved and I transferred to the Arbroath Club which also eventually dissolved and I am now a proud member of the Forfar Club.  Over the years, I have been President of both Clubs on more than one occasion and also Treasurer.

As well as Inner Wheel, I am also a Guide Leader, President of Canoustie Muirdrum WRI, and a member of the Trefoil Guild here in the town.  With the support of my husband Stuart and my family, I am very much looking forward to being your Chairman, visiting all the Clubs in District 1 and some further afield and making many new friends.

I have chosen the Scottish Multiple Sclerosis Society as my charity which is a very personal choice as my mother had MS and died at the age of 44 and so I will very much appreciate your support.

Being the 100th Anniversary of Inner Wheel we all need to celebrate this very significant event in our Inner Wheel Lives.

Annetta xx

We look forward to hearing about their work at our District Meeting in  August and hearing how our fundraising will help.  To find out more please look at their web site —

Our New Year Begins

District Assembly –  at the Invercarse in Dundee.
A great start to our new year with almost 80 members in attendance.   A happy occasion with face to face Peer Groups, an excellent lunch, lots of business, discussion and news passed on to clubs and a thoughtful and informative presentation from MS Scotland – this year’s District Chairman’s Charity. Well done everyone! We shall be trying to Shine a Light on Inner Wheel in our local communities through our activities and projects – like “100 for 100″.

Trish’s Celebration

Annetta offers District 1’s congratulations and best wishes to Trish on becoming our International Inner Wheel President 2023-24.  Trish hosted a celebratory event in the George Hotel Montrose to which all members of the District were invited – a reel of photos from the event can be seen in the post below.

District Rally in Aberdeen

Association President Karen Davies, Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Dr David Cameron and District 1 Chairman Doris Campbell.

Our fabulous District 1 Rally was held on 26th May at the Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen. Congratulations to District Chairman Doris and the members of the Aberdeen Club for hosting such a wonderful day – even the sun came out for us!  Our thanks to Aberdeen City Council Photographer,  Norman Adam for taking amazing “official” photographs.  A wonderful day was had by all members who attended along with visiting District Chairmen and our Association President Karen.  Other distinguished guests included the President of Aberdeen Rotary Club, Rotary 1010 Governor Elect and the Lord Provost of Aberdeen.

Blackpool Conference

A wonderful time was had by the members who journeyed to Blackpool in March for the Association Conference – the first since lockdown! Wonderful speakers, healthy debate, our District Dinner and Link Lunch followed by a sparkling party and dancing at the Tower Ballroom.  Here are just some of the images from the event –

International Service Rally

A fabulous time was had by all at the International Rally hosted by District International Service Chairman, Nanette and the Stirling Club.  See below for many pictures taken on the day.  Well done Stirling – a fabulous result of £1670 raised for Mary’s Meals.  Full report in our next News@1.

Margarette Golding Award

Congratulations to our Member of Council, Lesley Niven  has been presented with the Margarette Golding Award, for over 30 years dedicated to helping Stroke survivors at the Phoenix Club.  She is a driving force as a Trustee and an invaluable, caring and efficient team member.  The award was presented at a recent club coffee morning where Lesley was totally overcome, she had not a clue that Nanette Thomson and members of the Stirling club had started on this last year. The club are so thrilled for her.   Fantastic news, Lesley – I am sure all members of District 1 send our warmest  ccongratulations to you – and to the Stirling Club. Quite an achievement!

District Charity – SCAA

Doris’s chosen charity was SCAA – the Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance.   We are delighted to announce that our District has donated £6434 to SCAA!!!!!!  Fantastic effort ladies!  District Chairman Doris, Secretary Gladys and Editor Jean arrived at the Aberdeen heliport to find that the helicopter has been sent to a car crash in St Andrews –  so made the presentation to Paramedic Clair – see above.  Banff and Kirriemuir had made presentations at Aberdeen and at Scone earlier – pictures on club pages.

The Book Bus

District 1 amassed a mountain of books for this project – so much that the organisers came with the bus to the home of our ISC Nanette where over 50 boxes of books were loaded – around 1000 books.  Nanette and Jessie Stuart are seen with Monica and David Gordon of the Book Bus Zambia loading all the books – on the way to the Blackpool Conference.  Great effort from all our clubs!
