INNER WHEEL DAY
Beccles!
A day for service to the local community
This year Beccles Inner Wheel chose to celebrate World Inner Wheel Day by once again supporting the Beccles and Bungay Branch of Suffolk Sight, a community based sight loss charity. This small Club for the sight-impaired meets once a month for afternoon tea with entertainment or members are taken out to lunch at a local pub or restaurant. In January a special treat was organised for them in the form of a delicious afternoon tea prepared and served by the Inner Wheel as their service to the community. Members demonstrated their culinary skills by preparing three varieties of sandwich, cheese and sweet scones, sausage rolls and meringues. The event was attended by a total of forty people with entertainment provided by two first-class local jazz musicians, Ray Simmons on the keyboard and Tim Densham on clarinet. Their programme of well-known tunes included a tribute to Acker Bilk as well as a sing-a-long to popular numbers at the end.Another highlight of the event was the drawing of an Inner Wheel raffle, the prize for which was a helicopter flight for three from Beccles Heliport. The raffle, an initiative by our member Judith East, was in support of the East Suffolk Air Ambulance, President Gail’s charity, and raised the incredible sum of just over £1500. The winning ticket was drawn by Ray Simmons and the lucky recipient was Gill Parker, our Club Treasurer. She is looking forward to a bird’s eye view of the local landscape together with family members. Furthermore the raffle enabled the Club to achieve the 100 for 100, a Time to Celebrate by selling in excess of 100 tickets. All in all this was a wonderful way to celebrate Inner Wheel Day while also paying tribute to the founding of Inner Wheel one hundred years ago.
Saffron Walden Innerwheel Club
Saffron Walden Innerwheel Club celebrated International Inner Wheel day on 10 January with a bring and share supper at the Alms House in Saffron Walden. We had a raffle in support of the international Book Bus Charity working to improve literacy in Zambia, Malawi and Ecuador.
Ipswich Orwell
We had Prosecco and cake before our business meeting on the 10th January. We decorated the table with some of the Gonks we made for the 100 for 100 challenge which raised over £120.
Hunstanton
Hunstanton and District Members baked cakes and took them to the local residential care home, Nightingale Lodge in Hunstanton. We served coffee and cake to residents, one of whom was a past member. The residents thoroughly enjoyed it and asked us to come back.
Woodridge
Woodbridge Inner Wheel had a soup lunch today to raise money for The Smile Train. We haven’t a final total raised yet as some members who couldn’t be there will be make a contribution but hopefully it will be in excess of £150. We had home made soup followed by mince pies and shortbread, tea and coffee. We all had a really nice time chatting and just socialising. A very relaxing day making some money for charity.
Felixstowe
Felixstowe celebrated Inner Wheel Day with a lunch at a member’s house. Profits went to Presidents Charity.
Ipswich East
Ipswich East celebrated Inner Wheel day with a walk and brunch raising funds for the Long Trust (the District Chairman’s chosen charity).
Walkers set off on a cold and crisp, bright and sunny morning. Half a dozen plus dogs tackled the long walk and others opted for a more leisurely ramble round the Fynn Valley. just outside Ipswich. Meanwhile the catering team were busy preparing bacon rolls and hotdogs ready for their return and members and friends who were not walking.
There was a welcoming log fire to gather round to eat and chat as we celebrated 100 years of Inner Wheel.
