Ely Inner Wheel welcomed Jill Pettit of Emmaus, Landbeach, Cambridge to
their October meeting. Jill gave a brief history of the organisation which began
in post war France. She then described the work of Emmaus in Cambridge,
which is far more intensive and wide ranging than many members had
realised. They take in people who are homeless and living on the streets and
provide them with a safe home. They offer a range of help from medical
assistance and treatment for addiction to help with contacting estranged
families, and training for returning to work. There are 44 rooms with ensuite
bathrooms at the facility and the building is set on a lovely site with pond and
an orchard in the grounds. Jill encourage members to visit, not just drop off
donations, but to look around and visit the café which is staffed by the
residents. Treasurer Jenny Axford thanked Jill for coming to speak to
members and presented her with a donation
