D8 Ely holds annual event for international charity

This week Inner Wheel held its annual event to raise funds for an international charity. This year Ely invited local Rotarians and Inner Wheel members from across East Anglia to join them for an afternoon tea at St Mary’s church organised by international secretary Julia Smith. Ken Holmes and Alison Sanderson were present, representing the charity the International Childrens Trust. Ken explained the origins of the charity which began in the sixties as a set of aid programs run by Rotary club members. It became the an organised charity in 1967 and now works with a dozen projects around the world. Alison told attendees about three of their current projects. The ICT supports projects which are tackling difficult problems. In Zimbabwe it supports teenage mothers who are Aids orphans themselves. Social ostracism means these girls find themselves entirely alone. The project teaches them how to care for the baby and then gives the girls training so they can find employment.
Julia thanked Ken and Alison for coming and presented them with a cheque and a promise of more to come from the raffle being held.
