D21 – APP Norma Friar acknowledged

This is an extract from the Eulogy, given by her son, at the funeral of Association past President Norma Friar.

“The Inner Wheel Movement also played a major part in Mum’s life and brought her in to contact with so many lovely people, some of whom are with us today, not only in the UK as National President but across the world working for International Inner Wheel.

During her 23 years living in Cumbria mum enjoyed membership of Millom IW club, served on the district 19 committee as Chairman, editor, and member of the National Association Council until in 1994 when she moved to Shropshire, she joined Wellington IW club in District 21.

Now retired from teaching her appetite for work saw no let up as she became Association Constitution Chairman in 2000 and in 2004/5 became the National Association President. The year culminated in her Blackpool Conference where she addressed 3000 members at the Winter Gardens and ironically Dame Esther Rantzen was her guest of honour. Whilst mum supported numerous charities, her chosen charity for the year was Barnardo’s hence the charity of choice for any kind of donations today.

Following her year as President she became a national representative and was elected initially to the International IW board before joining the International IW Executive as Constitution chairman. It became a full-time job that took her to New Zealand, Borneo, India, and Malaysia to name just a few of the nine international conventions she attended.

All in all, until caring for dad took priority, she had compiled an impressive CV of service to the movement having held 21 offices – 8 club, 7 district, 4 national Association, and 2 International IW”.
