We were in for an interesting evening as our guest speaker Alison Hunt, gave us an inspiring talk about the Stockport based Wellspring charity for the homeless.

From its beginnings in 1991 near St Peter’s Church in Stockport, to the newer premises close to St Mary’s Parish church, Marketplace. Alison, who has work there many years, gave us a fascinating incite into its complex daily running. Open 365 days a year, with 10 paid staff and 150 volunteers.
A Doctor and nurse on site 5 days a week, each of the people in need are given a photo ID which enables them to access a bank account and thus claim the benefits for which they are entitled.
They have access to showers, receive clean dry clothing, a daily cooked breakfast, hot dinner and medical help and advice if needed.

25% of women access the service and they are on average aged between 35-45  years old. There are 12 Board Members which include many professionally qualified people.

Wellspring respond to a combination of issues surrounding housing, physical and mental health, substance misuse and addiction.
The aim is to integrated the homeless back into the community or rehab, with the necessary support.

Staff are very dedicated, and genuinely care about each of the homeless people they deal with. They also have access to Trauma Counselling Services themselves.

Fundraising is very important, as the cost to run Wellspring is approximately £1,365 per day and the food bill is £20,000 a year!

Many events are held regularly to raise awareness and support the ongoing work. Sponsored Walks  Sleepouts, Harvest campaign, Rucksack Project, Christmas Dinner Appeal, and Football Club collections to mention just a few.

Alison took back with her items of new socks and underwear which are much needed, tins of meat, fruit, vegetables and custard all donated by members on the evening.

Our support for Wellspring is ongoing, and we will continue to donate money and items throughout the year.

In 2026 Wellspring will have reached its 35th Anniversary!
