D22 – Prize Winner at The Lake District School of Food and Wine

At the Harrogate Conference Kathy Kings from the Ravenshead Club in D22 was the lucky winner of a one-day Cookery course held at the Lake District School of Food and Wine. This was a prize given by Pat Russell, in aid of Past President Heather's charity, Arthritis Action. Kathy & Mike arrived at 8.00am and after some initial introduction to the days plan, they started off with making tea loaves. It was an enriched dough with eggs and sultanas and would take quite a long time to prove. Granary bread was next, with Pat explaining about the flour, using fresh yeast, kneading and proving which was so interesting. Kath made a large round cob granary loaf, then vegetable soup bread plus tear and share bread. The most complicated  recipe was the cheese and tomato swirl, which looked like an attractive Swiss roll, with tarragon, tomato purée, garlic, paprika and cayenne pepper. To finish a Rosemary focaccia was made. By lunch time they had numerous different breads in the proving cabinet, with Pat’s expertise co-ordinating what and when each went into the ovens! Unlimited teas and coffees were enjoyed along with a delicious lunch, including wine and a dessert.                           Leaving at 4.00pm Pat had given them a wonderful day to remember, stunning Lake District scenery, wonderful hospitality and beautiful memories to keep, not forgetting some delicious breads. All the recipes were in a folder which they were able to take home.
