Who We Are and Where Do We Meet?
The Inner Wheel Club of Arbury was chartered in June 1979 and is based in Nuneaton which is a Warwickshire town very close to the geographical centre of England and George Eliot country.
The name Arbury comes from the local Arbury Hall, known as the Gothic Gem of the Midlands, and the home of the Newdigate family for centuries. The author George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) was born in 1819 on the Arbury Estate and lived in Griff House (now a hotel) for 21 years. She is commemorated in many ways in the town. The large George Eliot Hospital and the nearby Mary Ann Evans Hospice are living memorials to her and her book titles and their characters feature widely as names in the town, the schools and hospital wards. There is a nice statue to her memory in the town centre.
The Inner Wheel Club of Arbury is a very active and friendly club and we enjoy meeting monthly where during a meal we can socialise and enjoy each other’s company. This is usually followed by an interesting speaker and any news or plans for forthcoming events are announced. Many other members share the responsibility of planning the events which provides further opportunities for fellowship and fun!
We have close ties with Arbury Rotary Club and this is to the benefit of both clubs when organising social or charity events. We also welcome members from the surrounding area.
Arbury are part of Inner Wheel District 6, and we meet at:
Weston Hall Hotel, Mill Lane, Bulkington CV12 9RU
Closed in August,
When do we meet?
Meetings are held at 6.30pm for 7.00pm in the summer and 12.30 for 1.00pm in the winter, on the second Monday of every month. 100th Anniversary
On January 10th we celebrated the 100th birthday of Inner Wheel with a self catered meal, a toast to the Organisation with some ‘fizz’ and then fun entertainment to round off an enjoyable afternoon.
Profits from the occasion will provide a donation towards the District’s International Service projects.
Club Activites
Although we don’t meet formally in August we were able to enjoy two social days out in lovely summer weather. The first was a coach trip to the Cotswolds and then a boat trip on the local canal with time to stop at a canal basin for lunch in the canal-side pub.
At the Club meeting in July we had an interesting after dinner talk by one of our members telling us about the preparations for the different Indian weddings.
In September we learnt about the history and art of growing Bonsai trees.
Last Autumn members modelled at our Fashion Show and Clothes Sale to raise funds for the Brainstrust Charity and Ileostomy Association.
Donations given in lieu of sending Christmas cards supported a group providing Christmas lunch for lonely or homeless people.
A club meetings we have learnt about the charities we support, hosted Rotary Club members and learnt about Cockney Rhyming slang, its history and how it features in modern day talk.
