Fun, laughter and Smiles at the start of the new Innerwheel Year for Warsop.

Members of the innerwheel club of Warsop have had a busy couple of months. Members got together to run the ever popular tea and cake tent at the Warsop carnival on Sunday 2nd July. The ladies did themselves proud with their cakes, selling every last one, and made over 600 hot drinks for the thirsty event visitors. The ladies hard work raised a fabulous £1023 for new President Sharlotte Somerville’s charity pot. The day was full of smiles and happy chatter and enjoyed by everyone.
On Wednesday 5th July the club held their first meeting of the new Innerwheel year. Past president Christine Parkin handed over the regalia of office and inducted new President Sharlotte. President Sharlotte then had the honour of inducting new member Jenny. Jenny spoke a little about why she had chosen to join the Innerwheel club of Warsop and informed the meeting that it was due to the friendliness and vibrancy of the members, which was agreed to by all the members. President Sharlotte wishes to include the community in her events this year and has planned a year of friendship and giving. Her charities are all local with the aim of supporting the local community.
On the 29th of July members attended a thank you event hosted by past district chair and Warsop member Elaine Hopkins MBE. A fun afternoon was had with a lovely buffet and a few games of beetle drive. Laughter was the order of the day and could be heard outside the venue.
On 2nd August the club held their monthly meeting at The Hostess Restaurant, where they welcomed the new district chair Mary Hind. Mary told the members about her history with Innerwheel and her plans for the 100th year of Innerwheel. An interesting and inspiring discussion shared with friendship made the evening a pleasant one.

President Sharlotte Somerville presented Mary with a basket of flower as a token of thanks for visiting the club. The flowers were arranged by talented member Christine Fretwell.
On the 19th of August some of the hardier members joined together for a family picnic on the lovely Carrs park. The very windy day made blowing bubbles so easy and the smallest member of the group, President Sharlotte’s granddaughter Lyla-Rae and club member Emily Somerville had great fun trying to make the biggest bubble! Lively chatter over a picnic lunch was a perfect end to the event. Marjory Zillwood, of the club’s founder members, felt the chill in the wind so became a gnome when other members wrapped her up in extra layers. What a sight she was with her little pointed hood!
On Saturday 2nd September President Sharlotte, Vice President Elaine and other members of the club had a stall at the Langwith Show at Rhubarb Farm, Langwith. They sold gift that were handmade by members of the club and had an information display which encouraged people to find out what Innerwheel is all about. It was a wonderful sunny day with the word being spread about the fun and service Innerwheel provides it’s members.
On Wednesday 6th September the club welcomed Carmel and Joe from Hetty’s to their meeting at the Hostess Restaurant. Carmel and Joe gave a very interesting and thought-provoking presentation about the work that they do with substance users and their families. Joe told the club about his personal journey and support he and his family receive from Hetty’s and why he now volunteers with the organisation and helps to support others.
The club have still more fun events to look forward to. They are holding a harvest supper, on September 30th, at The Oaklands and will be hosting the residents who live at the Oaklands for the supper and will enjoy a few games of friendly bingo. Their Charter is on the First of November where they will be having a hog roast and through the decades disco. Then the club will be holding it annual Christmas fair on 29th November at The Fretwell Centre. We hope to see you at some of our events.

2022-2023 a year in review

What a wonderful year the club has had celebrating it’s 50th year.
President Christine Parkin had arranged a fun-filled year and it has fulfilled all she hoped for.
A summer of fun and friendship was the theme in Warsop. Members got very busy baking and helping keep visitors fed and watered at the Annual Warsop Carnival. This is always a popular event and was very well attended being the first after Covid. The Ladies and a few supporting husbands did a fantastic job and kept smiling all day, even in the heat of one of the hottest days of the year. Heads were scratched and puzzled faces were seen when the Club held it’s “bits and bobs” lunch. The club members and guests were intrigued and puzzled by the items that they had to guess the name of, with President Christine’s team guessing the most, well done. The whole club were proud when our member, and past president, Elaine Hopkins was inducted as Chairman of District 22.
In September a traditional pie and pea supper was enjoyed by members and their families being entertained by Smooth Duo. What an evening of fun and friendship that was.
in October members of Warsop and guests enjoyed an afternoon tea with author K.L. Lovely. A jolly afternoon of friendship was shared by everyone. On the 2nd of November, the Innerwheel Club of Warsop celebrated our 50th Charter at the hostess restaurant. The members and guests enjoyed a wonderful evening with an entertaining after-dinner speech by Mr Charles Hanson of Bargain Hunt Fame. Charles ended the evening with an impromptu auction of tickets to VIP treatment at a filming of one of his shows, which raised money for President Christine’s chosen charity for Prostate Cancer. In November we held our annual Christmas fair and coffee morning at the John Fretwell Sporting Centre. There were 22 stalls and the event was very well attended by Innerwheel members from around the district and from members of the public. A very jolly and festive start to the Christmas festivities was had by everyone, and an amazing £1476.05p was raised for President Christine’s charity. In December the ladies held a flower arranging day. The event was hosted by members, Christine Fretwell and Mavis Allin, who did a fantastic job of teaching the techniques to make a floral Christmas ring and an all round table arrangement. The ladies enjoyed the day immensely and there was laughter and smiles all day, along with the aroma of freshly cut foliage and flowers. The club then supported its member and district Chairman Elaine Hopkins MBE with a carol service at St Peter and St Paul church in Warsop. The service was supported by members of the Innerwheel District 22 and their families. The Innerwheel District 22 choir sang several carols and members of Warsop club gave the readings. This was followed by tea and cake and a visit from Santa for those boys and girls who were on his good list. The ladies concluded their festivities with a Christmas friendship meal at The Fox at Kirton. A busy but fun-filled end to 2022.
The new year was celebrated with the International Innerwheel Day event being held on 7th January. Our international development member Mary Pay organized a friendship lunch and quiz. The event was supported by members of the club who enjoyed a lunch of soup and delicious puddings. The quiz got everyone’s brains working overtime and some very funny answers were forthcoming. In February the club held one of its Craft and Crumpet evenings, where members got together to “pimp their pinnies” The evening was hosted by Sharlotte Somerville who introduced the idea of decorating member’s aprons or other items. Everyone had fun and the first aid box stayed tightly closed without blood being drawn or fingers lost! The members created some lovely items, including beautiful aprons, a flower-embellished t-shirt and some lovely bunting. All hand sewn while chatter and laughter filled the room. In March the Spring market was held at the John Fretwell Centre. This event although less well attended than the Christmas one was still a success with visitors from district 22 clubs and the local community buying gifts and treats. Some of the Warsop members along with members from other clubs in District 22 visited the Holocaust center in April. This was a thought-provoking visit and brought to mind that we are all lucky to live where we do with family and friends around us.
The last event of the year was the Fifty and Fabulous Ball. The event was enjoyed by everyone and raised a fantastic £1400 for the charity pot. Everyone dusted off their glamorous clothes and accessories which complimented the gold and black-themed decorations and made everything that little bit more sparkly. The hostess restaurant provided wonderful food and service. The music was presented by singers from LPP events and got guests up and dancing with some singing along. Sore feet and lost voices were sure to have left the venue at the end of the evening!
As well as these fantastic events the club has enjoyed a variety of speakers on their club nights. From crystal therapy to charity speakers such as the Chesterfield Street Pastors and SHE UK, the speakers have been informative and well-received.
On 7th June the club held their meeting as usual at the hostess. President Christine then presented cheques to her chosen charities with an amazing £5670 going to Prostate Cancer UK, and £750 going to Warsop sporting trust, which will be used to support ongoing sporting activities for local children. £750 was also presented to The Oaklands complex to support people living within the complex, and the final £220 was given to the District Chairman, Elaine Hopkins, for her charity of Age UK. The outgoing District Chairman is a member of the Warsop club and everyone is proud that she was able to take on the role. A final cheque was later presented to a local charity, Rhubarb Farm, for £300 to enable them to continue their work with vulnerable local people. What a fantastic end to President Christine’s year. The club look forwards to the fun and friendship planned by incoming President Sharlotte Somerville. If you would like to meet with the club as a guest you are very welcome to join in on the first Wednesday of the month. Meetings are held at the Hostess in Sookholme starting at 7pm. A carvery meal and hot drink is enjoyed at a cost of £10. More information can be found on the Inner Wheel website www.innerwheel.co.uk or by emailing innerwheelwarsop@gmail.com
